Worst racehorse comments?

http://www.philly.com/philly/news/homepa...

comments? on yahoo home page, caught my eye, what do all of you think about this?

Worst racehorse comments?

You would have thought that the breeder of this mare, or at least, owners of the sire and/or dam would have paid big money just to get her off the track...they surely knew by the time she was 3 what she was...just think, that man could have probably been a millionaire if he had just been a little smarter. I couldn't believe how she was bred!

Worst racehorse comments?

Yes, comments are horrible.

I say take her off the track - train her, and watch her blossom into a beautiful Dressage Horse!!!!!!

Worst racehorse comments?

Seems almost like she does not want to race. Most people would have taken her off the track long before this. Why would they race a horse that is losing so much? She is a beautiful horse though.

I knew of a horse that was taken off the track because he did not want to run. Unfortunately, he was taken back to race a few more times. He has a great pedigree and is a very sweet horse. A good owner would not have let this go on for so long.

I am not against horse racing, but this is just wrong. Can you imagine what it does to her self esteem?

Worst racehorse comments?

i actually was thinking about asking the same question..

i don't understand why they don't just sell her to a trainer to become a nice riding horse..

and honestly, if you kept ALL the 'loser' horses on the track, then i think that record would be long broken... I'm pretty sure my ex racer never won a race.. if he was kept on the track then heck, he could have lost 300!

its must be kinda sad for her /=

Worst racehorse comments?

That is sad. How awful that must be for her self confidence. She should have been off the track a long time ago. I would have taken her off at the age of 5 or 6 if she hadn't done anything by then.

Worst racehorse comments?

I'm not sure the horses' self confidence is an issue here, more her willpower to live if she's forced to spend grueling time and precious energy on something she doesn't enjoy doing. I don't think horses really get self concious.

But, she could just be a slow horse and love to race. Though my opinion is in agreement with the first answer, try her in another discipline. She may not have the makings for a racehorse, but her trained speed and agility could put her up in the jumper ring. Maybe even barrel racing, you never know.

Worst racehorse comments?

That's funny! No, she didn't necessarily need to be taken off the track earlier. If she's sound and enjoys running (which most horses do) ther's no reason to take her off. She's actually really cute!

Worst racehorse comments?

Horses can be pretty smart. Maybe she's doing it on purpose for fun.

Worst racehorse comments?

Sounds like the gal is not at all happy with her job...

Who else here can identify with that? (Snicker)

Why race her anymore? Probably because she's insured and if they luck out and she breaks down, they can nuke her and collect on the policy. I don't know these people; perhaps that's a bit cruel, but I have to wonder.

If her dam is a full sister to Secretariat, perhaps this mare has a future as a producing broodmare...that would follow the pattern he set.

Worst racehorse comments?

Seems to me they sure like to waste entry fees. Guess perhaps the owner needs a for sure tax write off? With regards to her staying sound though....kind of reminds me of a quote I heard years ago....seems like perhaps I read it in one of the Ruffian books...."The good ones always get hurt. The bad ones never run hard enough to hurt themselves." Guess she kind of went with her maternal line....The Bride may have been a full sister to Secretariat....but she never won a race. Now....to me....one of the worst race horse comments I ever heard quoted was right after Ruffian broke down.....Leroy Jolley's (Foolish Pleasure's trainer) father was reportedly heard to laugh and say "First time they throw some speed at that b*tch and she comes unbuckled." Now that was just cold. Ugly. Uncalled for.

Worst racehorse comments?

I don't know why they keep running her, but I think it's really funny over all! Usually race horse trainers %26amp; owners don't want tto keep putting the investment into something that doesn't pull out a win every now and then. Maybe they keep running her as a joke because they think it's funny too?

Poor horse, she's just too slow or doesn't care enough, and after all this time and all these races, she's probably soured to it and tries less and less.

They mention Zippy Chippy in the article - several years ago, he came to a baseball stadium where I lived - and raced one of the ball players on our semi-pro team, the Red Barons. The horse lost to ball player running across a ball field.

It was pretty funny. Honestly, I thought Zippy Chippy was a Quarter Horse because of his name, I didn't know he was a thoroughbred, as the article said he was. Maybe he was an appendix, huh? Still pretty pathetic that a horse can lose to a human - especially at a gallop.

Worst racehorse comments?

i completely agree with Animal Girl! she clearly doesn't want to race, so why force her if she's not going to win??? it's cruel, pointless and stupid!!! as Animal Girl said, why not train her up to do something else? I bet she could make a superb dressage horse, or showjumper or anything (except racehorse of course) she deserves another chance.

Worst racehorse comments?

Thankfully they are now retiring her and putting her back on the farm. Also, thankfully this mare did not injure herself while running. I grew up in the racing industry - this story is amazing and a testament to her strength and endurance to run as often as she did...perhaps if she wasn't run like this, she may have placed once in a while!

Worst racehorse comments?

That is exactly what they are doing is breaking a record. Its pretty sad, but there are shady people out there. I deffinitely would want her as a broodmare though. She may not be fast, but she is physically strong and not many are any more. She would make a nice edition to somebody's broodmare band but thats me. Most people breed cause of accomplishments which is understandable but not many can run and run and run and stay sound there whole life. This mare has been already pegged from rescues. There ready to scoop her up when the jackass finally retires her. This is old news for me.

Worst racehorse comments?

I agree i would have taken her off the track years ago it sounds like she doesent want to run. She is a very beautiful horse.

Worst racehorse comments?

i think you shoulde train her up into a dressage horse or showjumpin or sumin

if u do, do that i think i t will turn out fab x

Worst racehorse comments?

obviously the mare didnt care if she was running alone. it doesnt mean that she was unhappy or didnt want to run. she just didnt have the "want to win" attitude. from what i read, it seems like she was great to ride and raced fine, she just wasnt fast. i think the people that kept racing her where a lot better than a lot that pull the losers off the track and sell them to god knows who, and they cant handle them and they end up as meat. the guy who owned her did it as a hobby, for fun. and if he is willing to put up as much money as he did for her to race all tose times, than so be it. some race horses are very well cared for, ours are, no matter what happens. there was nothing wrong with her still racing.

a lot of people show their horses in many other events and never win...whats the big difference. barrels, reinning, eventing can be just as rough and tough on horses.

Worst racehorse comments?

I cannot fathom why they'd keep her on the track that long. I have a 17yo mare who only has one race listed in the winning section on her papers, but when I looked her up on the jockey club's interactive registration page, she apparently had been entered in over 70 races! She had horrible finishes too. Her legs are ruined, she is such a cripple, osselets, bowed tendon, bog spavin's and rotated coffin bones from repeated founder. (I should note a boarding client left her here after being arrested and keeping her was my good deed for the day). It costs so much to raise and train a race horse that I do not understand why they keep her on the track, and just because her bloodlines were good, that does not mean that she will ever be one, so they should find her a new job.

there, I am done ranting for the day.
