I would never go out of my way to say something like that to a guy, let alone POST it for the world to see.

I wonder if he would feel the same if he read your comments to another man that were the same as his to these girls. He probably does see it as harmless, but it doesn't mean it hurts you any less. First of all, there ARE laws on the books...

Defamation

Slander

Blackballing/blacklisting

Discrimination

Retaliation

It just all depends on who is saying it, who they are saying it to, what they are actually saying, and if there is any truth behind it.

Defamation and Slander are the most common lawsuits against employers and is the reason why so many employers only give "name, rank, and serial number" when giving references because they don't want a lawsuit against them for speaking about someone's character and having to prove it.

HOWEVER, if what an employer is saying is true (regardless of how nasty) and they can back it up with documentation, you don't have any options. It's only in the event they are saying false or intentionally malicious things about you (that are damaging, i.e. keep you from getting a job) that you could pursue damages for defamation or slander (one is written and one is verbal - that's the only difference between the two).

The actual laws behind discrimination will be the same as in the workplace (race, ethnicity, gender, religion, disability, age {over 40}, pregnancy, etc).

Retaliation is if they fired you (or are now badmouthing you) for reporting them for doing something illegal or something along those lines...

And blackballing/blacklisting - i.e. trying to keep you from being able to get another job is usually a state law, will be specific from state to state and unfortunately, usually doesn't have much teeth. For example, in Oklahoma - it's a $500 fine... ouch, right?

Again - given my questions above of the who, what, when details... you may have legal recourse, but then again - you need to assess whether its worth your time and money to pursue. If you feel like you have a case - you might go to the local EEOC office and they may file on your behalf (and save you the change), direct you to the local Department of Labor, or if nothing else, give you basic advice on if you have a case and/or issue a right to sue letter on your behalf if they don't feel they have enough for them to take the case on, but its something you still want to pursue.

And worse case, you just ask that they not be contacted for references.

You have to just ignore them, they'll get bored and go play their childish little games somewhere else because this is all they're doing, they're justifying the fact that all they are childish.

When they make a comment again you could just give them a face that says "Why are you wasting your breathe, this isn't bothering me." Because it shouldn't be bothering you, it shows that they're the ones being childish and you're the one who isn't. Stay calm and don't give into their games.

If this continues, you could tell a teacher. Just casually tell the teacher to have a word with them, there's no need to make a big deal out of it.

I can think of several reasons why answers might be negative or mean - the answerer is wasted and thinks it's funny, the answerer is pathetic and thinks it will make him/her feel better, or someone has taken offense at a question you asked or an answer you gave and is not handling it well.

Whatever the reason for their action, your reaction should be the same: report them. According to the Y!A Community Guidelines, answers which are mean, abusive, insulting, ranting or venting are unacceptable. Helping to police the site is part of your responsibility as a member here. If you don't do something about it, it will just keep happening.

Well think about the question and look at the data you have. Notice that your values are not the same as the literature values? That's what it's asking you about. Explain how far off from the literature value your values are and explain possible reasons for this discrepancy.

Have you ever heard of "percent error?" Well like the name says it's a measure of your percent error.

Note that the answer must be positive so you should have the absolute value sign around actual-experimemtal/actual.

It's not very clear what you're looking for - what kind of references do you need and who are you comparing the students to? You mentioned cultures - are you specifically comparing to 'British' culture? - if so, it's a bit vague.

I'm sorry to pick at your question but I teach a 100% Pakistani origin class in a very culturally un-mixed area of a reasonably large city. As a result of this lack of mixture, the children I teach have very little contact with 'British' culture, and therefore expectations are shifted somewhat in school and more obviously at home. The children tend to be very racist towards me (white), though they often don't realise they're being offensive as they've picked up a lot of their manners from home - mainly from older siblings or cousins. Parents are very supportive, and genuinely want to safeguard their children. The boys have lower motivation and expectations of themselves, therefore the girls I teach tend to try a lot harder and want to succeed. I believe this is because they understand how privilaged they are to receive a good education. I teach year 6 (11 year olds) and the boys are already beginning to show a lack of respect for women - evident sometimes in their behaviour towards myself. Generally behaviour with me is good, though I have witnessed bad behaviour from my class towards women teachers at all levels - I believe that respect for their teacher is the main reason they are good for me. I've tended to treat the children as I expect them to treat me - ruling out any form of inappropriate language, always being respectful and making eye contact when speaking.

The main barrier in this kind of community is that children are not able to mix with other cultures and it breeds a lack of tollerance and even a degree of racism as they don't fully understand how to integrate into normal situations outside of their confort zone. Ways I've tried to tackle this is to take them on as many trips as possible and introduce lots of visitors to the class.

There is no reason to end your friendship with this other mother. Simply tell her that ALL children are individuals and not "cookie cutter" children and all should be raised accordingly. By the time I was two I could speak both English and Spanish in complete sentences, but I took forever in learning how to walk because I was apparently afraid of falling(I've been a klutz my entire life). Since I could speak so clearly and actually ask for what I wanted instead of running around for it, it only made people think I was making my mother a slave. I apologize for not answering sooner. Some time ago I read the 360 and got sidetracked. It is very good, informative and tells it like you see it. some will have a check box that says 'check here to hide comment box'
